The internship program at Journey exists to coach and equip students who are exploring or pursuing a call to ministry by providing them with ministry exposure, mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities. If God has put a passion and desire in your heart to serve His church, then we want to come alongside you and help you grow in your calling and better understand how to use your gifts. Our program will disciple and develop you spiritually, personally, and professionally as you learn to walk closely with Jesus, mature in your leadership, and serve His Church in Kansas City and around the world.
We have roles available in multiple areas of ministry where your unique skills and gifts can be used to make an impact. As a result of their training in character and competency, former Journey Interns are now serving in ministry all over the world.
Internships at Journey are for college-aged adults (18-24) exploring and/or preparing for a call to full-time ministry. Read about the different levels of our internship program, as well as the requirements for each level, below.
Typically interns must be an Apprentice before they can become a Resident unless previous internship/ministry experience or additional factors contribute. Levels and placement decided by Intern Director.
These are students in upper level/graduate level college course work in pursuit of a degree in ministry. This level of internship is a bridge to a staff role at Journey or elsewhere in ministry.
At every level of our internship program, interns will experience as much ministry exposure as possible in the primary area of their choosing. Multiple positions are available in several key ministry areas.

We work hard to ensure your time with us is well spent and provide opportunities for personal development, leadership development, connecting with high-achieving ministry leaders, hands-on learning, one-on-one mentorship, and community and lifelong friendships.
Discover your design and how to apply the gifts God has given you. All Journey Interns have the opportunity to go through Growth Track — a five-step process that helps you know God, make a difference, and follow Jesus.
Interns will have countless opportunities to participate in both large- and small-group leadership training. Past topics have included developing humility, unity, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills; how to mentor and disciple others; how to create a budget for ministry (and life!); creating an ideal week and practicing healthy rhythms; how to lead volunteer and team meetings; and more.
We’re blessed to have connections and partnerships with a number of impactful leaders all across the country. Whenever possible, we make an effort to connect our interns to these difference makers in a small group format so they can have their questions answered and gain wisdom. Leaders who have visited in the past include Jimmy Dodd, CEO and founder of PastorServe; Mac Lake, founder of Multiply Group; and Marcellus Casey, COO of The Hope Center and chaplain to the Kansas City Chiefs.
We believe one of the best ways to learn is by doing. As a Journey Intern, you will have plenty of opportunities to shadow and dialogue with ministry leaders, plus dive into the work of ministry. We focus on a practical (not theoretical) approach to learning and want you to be a part of projects that matter. From making Sunday services run to being the team liaison on a mission trip, you will have the chance to not only serve, but lead.
Aside from group workshops and training sessions, every intern is also assigned a mentor on our ministry staff team. Your mentor will be a seasoned leader in your ministry area of choice and will have weekly one-on-ones with you to help coach you, debrief after events, answer questions, and pour into you spiritually. Your mentor will guide you and hold you accountable while also encouraging and equipping you to step into a leadership role and bring fresh ideas to the table.
Your spiritual community is a critical part of a successful career, regardless of where you go in life, and a foundational element of a healthy walk with Jesus. Interns at Journey aren’t just colleagues; they’re friends, too. From attending regular Journey College & Young Adults gatherings to going to concerts and on road trips together, nearly all our past interns have developed lifelong friendships from our Intern Program.
