Over the past six years, God has used the Journey Impact Center to reach nearly 25,000 people across Kansas City—meeting practical needs and, most importantly, pointing people to the hope found in Jesus. While the Journey Impact Center has been a great way for us to reach people in our community, it’s only one of many ways we’re a church for our community, not just in it. As the needs in our community grow and change, so is our outreach strategy.
That’s why, after May 31st, the Impact Center will be closing its doors. While the physical building will be gone, the impact will only increase. We see this shift as an opportunity to be even better stewards of the resources God is providing us so we can have greater long-term impact. By closing a set of physical doors, we’ll be able to figuratively open even more with our current ministry partners and through a new initiative we’re calling “Journey Cares 2.0.”
This initiative will unify all our outreach—benevolence, food and clothing, handyman help, foster/adoption support, and Care Groups—into one application, while also inviting individuals into a 90-day Life Skills discipleship program focused on following Jesus, building practical skills, and forming mentoring relationships.
Also, starting in July, we’ll launch a twice-monthly drive-through distribution of hygiene kits, and we’ll continue accepting hygiene item donations at the Impact Corner in the Atrium. The final day to donate food and clothing is May 2, and the last Impact Center shopping appointments will happen May 16.
If you have any questions about these updates, or want to know more about how you can get involved, feel free to email Cheri Hennig, our Community Impact Director.
Lee’s Summit isn’t only where our church is located; it’s our home. We live, work, and worship here and desire to see our community thrive.
When it comes to making a difference, many Christians think about traveling to the other side of the world on a mission trip. Although our global work is important, we know our efforts are just as necessary in Kansas City.
One of the biggest ways we accomplish this is through what we call Journey Cares. Journey Cares is a comprehensive initiative to help meet the physical needs of people in our community while also showing them the love of Christ in action. These initiatives include:
Plus, everyone who applies for assistance has the option to join a 90-day discipleship program that offers one-on-one mentorship and assistance with both life skills and spiritual growth.
By helping those in need, we’re able to better our community and show the love of Jesus in action.
Whether you’re wanting to volunteer or are looking for assistance for you and your family, we want you to know that Journey cares. Learn more about our community outreach and how we’re striving to live like Christ.
“And the crowds asked him, ‘What then shall we do?’ And he answered them, ‘Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.’”
Luke 3:10-11
Whether you need assistance with food or clothing, paying your bills, getting projects done around the house, or are interested in specific grants, our Journey Cares program is here to help meet your needs. Below are just some of the ways we help people in our community. If you need any assistance at all, or need care and support, please don’t hesitate to fill out our Journey Cares form!
We offer assistance with house repairs and projects through a group at Journey called Mission 2540. Mission 2540 is a group of men that offers help with minor home updates and repairs, yard work, disaster relief, etc.
Life can prove challenging at any point, and it can be difficult to make ends meet. If you’re going through financial hardship, our benevolence funds help with utility payments, housing costs, and more.
Please note that benevolence funds are available to regular attenders of Journey to utilize once for emergency situations.
Life can be inexplicably hard. But God gave us community, so we wouldn’t have to go through those hard times alone. Our Care Groups offer supportive environments for individuals struggling with pain, loss, addiction, or grief, allowing them to heal and connect with others in similar circumstances.
Journey partners with Lifesong for Orphans to offer an adoption grant for JCI families who are hoping to adopt a child domestically. Lifesong for Orphans is a Christian organization that supports children by facilitating adoption grants between families and local churches to help alleviate the expense of international and domestic private adoptions. If you attend Journey and are interested in or currently pursuing a domestic adoption, you could be eligible for this grant.
Here at Journey, we’re passionate about supporting foster and biological families alike through our Foster & Adopt Ministry (FAM). One of the ways we accomplish this is though our grants for foster kids. These small, one-time grants are meant to help cover the expense of extracurricular activities (sports, dance, music lessons, etc.) that enhance and enrich a foster kid’s life. If you’re a foster parent living in Jackson or Cass county and would like assistance, you can fill out the linked application. Note that grant funds are limited and applicants must meet all criteria to be considered.
When you’re navigating life’s hurts, you need a strong support system. We want to help however we can and have additional grief and mental health resources, so you can move forward on your healing journey.
