Volunteer Roles at Journey

Experience Prep & Reception Teams

The Experience Prep team prepares environments and resources and ensures our ministry initiatives run smoothly. 

In this role you will: 

  1. Serve at Journey during the week
  2. Provide support for various Sunday and weekday teams
  3. Prepare environments for ministry 

The Bulletin and Worship Center Prep team gathers to prepare for a meaningful worship experience. 

In this role you will: 

  1. Serve at Journey during the week
  2. Prepare and assemble worship guides 
  3. Prepare the Worship Center for services 
  4. Handle preparations for communion 

The Reception Team exists to provide hospitality and help for guests and Journey staff. Primary responsibilities include opening the Office doors to all Journey staff and guests with a smile and a warm greeting while providing hospitality to every individual in our community. Currently this is a weekday role. Depending on your availability, shifts vary from 8:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. M-Th. 

Building & Grounds Team

The Curb Appeal Team promotes good stewardship by helping with overall appearance around property. Projects and Serving opportunities include:
  1. Sunday Morning outdoor pre-service prep
  2. Power washing side walks
  3. Trash and Prayer walk around the property
  4. After event, Next day fire pit clean up
  5. Clean up debris buildup around curbs
  6. Other outdoor non-plant projects
The Landscape Team provides care for landscape areas around the property. Helping maintain attractive flowers on the outside provides a welcoming environment and promotes good stewardship of this property.
Projects include:
  1. Planting flowers in current planters each season
  2. Water and maintaining flower planters during the season
  3. Helping with weed removal in the mulch beds
  4. Planting flowers and bulbs in new designated areas

The Setup Team supports ministries by setting up rooms and having resources in place as needed allowing ministry leads to focus on their ministry; along with being a steward of the building and encouraging each other. Tasks include:  

  1. Prepare room and resources for ministry event   
  2. Have resources set up as stated  
  3. Place equipment used back in designated location   
  4. Close closet doors  
  5. See needs and meet them (i.e. change tablecloths when dirty) 

As part of the mowing team, you help maintain the curb appeal of the church property and keep the grass healthy and green. Tasks include:

  • Mowing designated areas of the lawn 
  • Trimming edges where mower cannot reach 
  • Spray and fertilize  
  • Yearly outdoor cleanup projects

Communications Team

Our Social Media team is comprised of creative individuals who have a knack for visual storytelling. If you love making polished, professional reels; taking candid photos of in-the-moment happenings; and writing snappy post captions, then this is the perfect team for you! 

If you have an eye for design and up-to-date skills in Adobe design products and/or Canva, then the Design Team could be a great fit. The Graphic Design Team uses their creativity to come up with visuals to support all our ministry efforts. We use designs in a wide range of media, including web graphics, templates, social media graphics, emails, print material, and more. 

Our church’s website is often the first place people experience Journey. If you’re a behind-the-scenes person that still has a passion for connecting people with Jesus, consider joining our Web Content Team. Put your WordPress, HTML, and CSS skills to good use! 

Our JCI mobile app plays a vital role in the discipleship of our congregation. If you have front-end app design and development skills, we’d love for you to join our team to help keep our app updated and give it a visual overhaul in the coming year.

The Photography Team plays a vital role in capturing images of the life change that happens in our church (morning and weekly ministries), in our community (local serve projects), and around the world (global impact trips). If you have a camera and an eye for capturing candid moments, this is the perfect opportunity for you. 

Do you love spreadsheets, data entry, and keeping things organized? Welcome! The Communications Team is in need of a handful of admin volunteers to assist with simple data entry, meeting template creation, registration form setup, volunteer scheduling, and more. 

Discipleship Team

These gifted shepherds lead groups of people, helping them grow spiritually and find community. There are many types of groups you might lead. Before leading a group, you must complete all steps of Growth Track, sign the JCI Partner Agreement, fill out the Leadership Application from the website, and be a faithful member of a JCI Discipleship Group for one full season. 

Are you good at connecting laptops to smart TVs? Do you have basic tech skills that could include troubleshooting lights or making sure a microphone is working for a classroom? If so, there’s a vitally needed ministry waiting for you! 

Do you love making people feel welcome? Twice a month, this team sets up Discipleship Group rooms, giving each group name tags, pens, group materials, table signage, and other supplies. At the end of the evening, all table supplies are collected and put away. In between you may attend a Discipleship Group or perhaps catch up on reading, prayer, or other tasks on your personal to-do list. 

Do you love making people feel welcome? About twice a month this team of excited, friendly people welcomes Discipleship Group attenders at the doors and helps them find their group’s room using a classroom map. 

Do you love to celebrate ministry by creating welcoming spaces? Multiple times a year, this team will help set up and decorate tables and rooms for Discipleship events. This team designs, purchases (with church funds), sets up, and cleans up decorations for a variety of Discipleship events with varied attendance (30-300 people). Your creativity is welcome! 

Do you love to celebrate ministry by preparing great food? On this team, you’ll serve multiple times a year by preparing food for events large and small. This team purchases (with church funds), prepares, serves, and cleans up food for a variety of Discipleship events. 

If you’re good at digital photography and file sharing, there’s a meaningful ministry for you—photographing and making videos of baptisms, discipleship groups, and other ministry events! Your photos and videos may be used on the website and as printed church promotional materials. 

Events & Culinary Team

As an Events Environment Team Member, you will help create memorable experiences for our church community! This role includes acquiring, creating, setting up and tearing down decor for various events. Your support will be vital in ensuring that each event runs smoothly, cultivating a sense of community and belonging. 

The Culinary Team Member plays a vital role in supporting the culinary team during various church events, including  holiday celebrations, church-wide dinners, and various special events. This position involves preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up food, ensuring a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all. 

Global Impact Teams

We believe everyone should go on at least one mission trip in their lifetime because God cares about the nations! Whether you’re brand-new to missions or you have specific skills you’ve been using in a global capacity for years, we have trips that will expand your horizons as well as your heart for other nations. 

Come join us in our monthly gatherings to pray for the nations, our church’s missionaries, and our Global Impact trips. This is a small team that meets monthly to share updates from our missionaries and takes the time to pray for them. When missionaries come back home for a visit, we also get to hear from them at these meetings and encourage them. 

If you’re interested in learning more about God’s heart for the world and why missions exist, then this is the perfect class for you! You will learn the foundation of missions and your role in God’s Global Kingdom. It is a four-week class on Sundays and will be offered several times throughout the year. 

Come serve with one of our local cross-cultural teams! If you have a heart for the nations but can’t go on a mission trip, there are opportunities for you locally. Work with refugees from the Congo with Agape Pamoja renovating houses, work with international students at UMKC, or serve refugees from all over by helping them practice their English with RefugeKC.  

Growth Track Team

People matter most, and we strive to make sure everyone at Journey is known, seen, and loved.   

In this role you will:

  1. Facilitate conversation as a table host 
  2. Follow up with people at your table 
  3. Help people get connected in a serving opportunity 
  4. Help people get connected in a discipleship group 

Guest Services Teams

The Campus Support team creates a positive and joyful first impression as guests arrive on the campus by welcoming them and providing clear and safe direction.  

In this role you will:

  1. Set up cones where needed to control traffic flow 
  2. Set up flags in designated locations  
  3. Set up appropriate signage to guide and direct guests  

This team assists new guests and seasoned partners with making connections and providing helpful information.

In this role you will:

  1. Help first time guests feel welcome  
  2. Connect people with community and resources 
  3. Assist people in finding information 

The Greeter Team works to provide an inviting and warm environment to help guests feel seen and encouraged. 

In this role you will:

  1. Be the first to say “hello” 
  2. Greet guests while opening doors 
  3. Direct first-time guests to our Connections Center team 

The Home Team works to create an inviting and warm environment to help guests feel at home.

In this role you will:

  1. Prepare coffee and coffee stations. 
  2. Greet people with a warm, welcoming smile and let them know you are thankful they are here… Welcome them home.  
  3. Fill hospitality supplies in bathrooms, wiping over surfaces and picking up the floor as necessary. 

The Parking Team creates a positive and joyful first impression as guests arrive on the campus by welcoming them and providing clear and safe directions for parking.  

In this role you will:

  1. Welcome guests with a smile and a wave 
  2. Assist guests to available parking spots and help direct handicapped guests to appropriate parking 
  3. Manage traffic flow 

The Usher Team serves to help create a distraction free, welcoming, and orderly environment in the Worship Center. 

In this role you will: 

  1. Assist guests to available seating, meeting various needs 
  2. Assist with offering and communion 
  3. Help maintain a distraction free environment during the message and worship 
  4. Prepare the area before and after service to be clean and orderly 

Journey College & Young Adults (JCYA) Team

Do you feel called to invest in and lead college students and/or young adults? Young Adult leaders/mentors participate in weekly discipleship of college students and young adults through helping lead a small group on Thursday nights. 

Do you have a passion for creativity and using your creative gifts to make an experience that people love? Our Creative Arts Team consists of production (AV/L), photography, videography, social media content, and more. If you’re skilled in any of these areas and have a heart for serving young adults, this team would be a great fit.

Do you enjoy creating spaces where people can build relationships and grow in their walk with the Lord? As part of this team, you can help prepare/set up events for our Young Adult ministry. This includes buying material or food (with church funds), setting up, and serving food during the event. 

Kids Ministry Team

Our Curriculum team is one of the most important behind-the-scenes teams! This team has many opportunities to serve. You can serve by printing activities, pre-cutting and pre-counting project supplies, organizing and separating all supplies, cleaning up classrooms, or putting away supplies. This team’s tasks are essential in helping our kids learn about Jesus on a Sunday morning. 

As a Thursday Set Up volunteer, you will prepare our Early Childhood (Journey Jr.) classrooms, ensuring that environments and curriculum are set up and ready for Small Group Leaders to have a successful Sunday morning experience. You win when the classrooms are ready and prepared for Small Group Leaders to lead well on a Sunday morning. 

Get ready to have lots of fun with the littlest members of Journey! Our Infant/Toddler leaders care for children ages six weeks to three years old. You will find yourself playing on the floor, snuggling babies, feeding littles, changing diapers, and following a premade schedule/curriculum. Our Infant/Toddler leaders give parents the peace of mind to engage in worship and hear the message each week

Get ready for a fun and engaging time with our three- to five-year-olds! In these classrooms, you will get to build relationships with kids, helping them to feel seen, known, and loved. You’ll get to lead kids through the pre-prepared classroom curriculum and activities while engaging kids in faith conversations. We ask that you serve at least twice a month to build strong relationships with the kids. 

As a childcare provider, you’ll find yourself on the floor playing with young kids, sitting in a chair reading a book with a child, feeding a bottle to a baby and changing their diaper, or completing activities with grade school children while their parents attend a small group or event to grow in spiritual maturity. 

Get ready for a fun morning with first through fifth grade kids as you engage with them through worship, activities, and in-depth faith conversations. In these classrooms, you will get to build relationships with kids, helping them to feel seen, known, and loved. You get to lead kids through the provided classroom curriculum and activities while having faith conversations with them. We ask that you serve at least twice a month to build strong relationships with the kids. 

Get ready to make a big impact! In this role, you’ll support preschool through fifth grade students with special needs, helping them feel seen, known, and loved. You’ll lead creative and adaptive classroom activities, engage in faith conversations, and partner with families to build strong, meaningful relationships with the kids. 

As a Thursday Set Up volunteer, you will prepare our elementary (JKids) classrooms, ensuring that environments and curriculum are set up and ready for Small Group Leaders to have a successful Sunday morning experience. You win when the classrooms are ready and prepared for Small Group Leaders to lead well on a Sunday morning. 

Welcome and greet first-time families to the Journey Kids area. Assist parents with the completion of a Connection Card online and filling out nametags, as well as explain the check in and check out process. Team members will present first-time guest gifts to kids and parents, show families to their kids’ classrooms, and give parents directions to other areas of the church for their morning worship experience. 

Get ready to have lots of fun with the littlest members of Journey! As a student leader you’ll find yourself snuggling babies, playing on the floor, singing worship songs, setting up snack, and helping teach kids ages birth through kindergarten about the love of Jesus while their parents attend worship and hear the message each week. 

Get ready for a fun morning with first through fifth grade kids as you engage with them through worship, activities, and faith conversations. In these classrooms, you will lead with our adult small group leaders to build relationships with kids, helping them to feel seen, known, and loved, all while digging deeper into God’s Word. 

Local Impact Teams

The Impact Center donations team is the key to keeping at least 30 households each week fed and clothed! Sort & organize donations on Mondays from 4:00-7:00pm. Pick up & deliver food items from Harvesters. Pick up & deliver items from the Impact Cart at JCI. Time commitment: ~3 hours per month. 

The Impact Center Shoppers Team is the relational core of the Imapct Center. As a volunteer, you will assist shoppers in finding what they need at the Impact Center, listen to their stories, pray with them, and share the hope of Jesus with them. Time commitment: at least 1 shift per month. 

Our friends and neighbors across KC will have an easier time listening and responding to the Gospel when their stomachs aren’t growling. Mobile teams serve around KC on various Saturdays throughout the month.

 

With our Hillcrest apartment in downtown LS, we get to come alongside a new resident/family every 90 days as they go through a Transitional Living Program. We celebrate wins, birthdays, and graduations, while providing encouragement along the way. Volunteers also clean & flip the apartment between residents. Time commitment: 2 hours per month. . 

We partner with Firm Foundations Ministries, who offer church services and Bible studies inside of prisons, train up church planters within the prisons, and have transitional living homes in Kansas City, KS.  

We are building a team to minister year-round to local police & fire departments as well as healthcare workers through meal delivery, prayer teams, family events, and more! Time commitment: 2 hours per month. 

Mission 2540 seeks to help the lost and hurting by providing free home repairs to anyone in need in the community and disaster relief across the US. If you have handyman/construction experience, Mission 2540 is for you! Time commitment: 2-4 hours per month. 

We’ve taken our global missions strategy and implemented it locally, both in LS and the urban core of KC. We know the Gospel transforms lives and communities, and bring Jesus to neighborhoods through meeting physical needs, building relationships, sharing the Gospel, and creating community. Time commitment: 3 hours, the first Saturday of every month. 

Our friends and neighbors across KC will have an easier time listening to the Gospel when their stomachs aren’t growling. Teams serve meals monthly with Nou 

Our FAM seeks to strengthen families in our community by meeting the physical needs of families in crisis through CarePortal, foster training, adoption grants, making quilts for children in foster care, and wraparound care for foster families. Not everyone is called to foster or adopt, but everyone can do something! 

Love two lives at a time by caring for young moms and their babies. Journey for Life offers community, discipleship, mentorship, childcare, and a meal for unexpected young mothers. Time commitment: at least 2 Mondays per month, more if you are a mentor. 

Production Team

The Audio Engineer is in control of setting the audio levels during Sunday services so it sounds pleasing to the ear. This entails working with the Worship Pastor and Production Coordinator to develop the sound during worship while also transitioning smoothly and maintaining microphone levels throughout the service. This is a teachable/coachable spot open to any person willing to learn. 

The Lighting Designer controls the lights in the room to visually create an environment conducive to worship. The lighting designer helps create smooth visual transitions that are comfortable and visually pleasing to everyone in the room. Prior experience is helpful but not required. If you have a willingness to learn and be coached, you can fill this role! 

The Stage Manager is an incredible entry-level position for any and everyone who wants to learn or experience production! Being a servant is a huge part of your personal faith walk and this position allows you to serve the entire worship and production team, as well as our whole congregation. 

Do you have admin skills and an interest in getting a peek behind the curtain? This would be a great fit for you! We need someone who is good with administrative tasks that can work with the Production Coordinator a few times each month to build out volunteer schedules and send serve invitations for the upcoming month.

Safety & Medical Teams

The Safety Team provides guests with a secure and orderly environment by addressing safety concerns and monitoring the building and surrounding spaces.  

  1. This team is comprised mainly of military and first responders 
  2. They are intentional in keeping our people safe 

The Medical Team serves to provide guests with both emergency and non-emergency first aid while at the church based around the policy and procedures set forth.  

  • This team is comprised mainly of people with a medical background 
  • They are intentional in keeping our people safe. 

Spiritual Care Team

This simple but important ministry role helps ease people’s nerves by meeting people in the Atrium on the day of their baptism. This role also prepares them for how the event will go, may help them into and out of the baptistry, and makes sure they have a towel. 

Our Spiritual Care Team welcomes people to Sunday morning and holiday services, gets to know them over time, prays with them, and helps them take their spiritual next steps when they make various spiritual decisions. Must be comfortable initiating conversations, praying with people, and calling people who fill out Spiritual Decision cards. 

This team is ready to serve those who have lost loved ones with only a few days’ notice. This important team of compassionate individuals comes to represent the heart of Journey Church International by welcoming funeral guests, helping them find service locations/restrooms in our building, and assisting families with the setup of memory tables, flowers, and refreshment areas. Clean-up after is also a service area for this team. 

Do you love and care for people by preparing great food? This team is ready to serve those who have lost loved ones with only a few days’ notice. This team oversees the entire food service process, including purchasing (with church funds), preparing, serving, and cleaning up food for funeral receptions. 

This team is ready to serve those who have weddings at Journey Church International—especially during the summer months. This important team of friendly individuals comes to represent the heart of Journey Church International by welcoming wedding guests, helping them find ceremony locations and restrooms in our building, and assisting families with the setup of special tables, guest books, decorations, and refreshment areas. Clean-up after the event is also a service area for this team. 

Student Ministry Team

This team ensures that every student has checked in at student night, including new students. The Check in team also helps with connecting students to their small group leaders and assisting them with spiritual next step follow-up.  

Facilitate and lead students in small group discussion and provide care for and discipleship to students in their small group. 

Coordinate and execute the set up and tear down of weekly and special student events. 

A coach leads a group of small group leaders. They ensure group leaders are creating a spiritually enriching environment for students. Coaches also provide support and care to the small group leaders. 

The Recreation Coordinator creates, plans, organizes, and facilitates recreation activities as need in Student Ministry. 

Recreation volunteers help to facilitate rec time as needed at weekly and special student events. 

Ushers assist people to their seats, facilitate the offering, and help maintain a distraction-free environment for students. 

Greeters set the tone for Student Night by welcoming students into the building to have a great student experience. 

Student worship team members lead students in corporate worship at our weekly student events by using their instrumental or vocal skills.

These volunteers open their homes and/or land to host community groups of 30-70 students. These events could be a one-time to weekly occurring depending on host availability. 

Event chaperones are adult volunteers who are willing to attend student events with the goal of helping care for and supervise students. 

This team assists with coordinating, planning, and executing any student special events. Examples of these events include Christmas parties, large church-wide or ministry-wide events, themed Student Nights, etc. 

This team helps plan, prepare, and serve food at student special events. 

This team assists in the creation of student graphics for announcements, social media, flyers, sermon series backgrounds, etc.  

Production volunteers assist in the overall presentation of the Student Night worship experience by using lights, cameras, and visual effects. 

Student team photographers capture our student ministry experiences at our weekly and special events for later use on social media and other promotional avenues. 

This team would help with the creation of regular and special event social media posts for the student ministry Instagram account and Parent Partnership Facebook group. 

These team members assist with student admin responsibilities that could include things like record-keeping, data entry, office tasks, and more. 

Video Team

The Video Switcher is a role that consists of coordinating the camera operators in a live setting to produce a visual experience during Sunday services. Think of it like making a live music video with the help of other camera operators. 

The Graphics Operator controls all the visuals displayed on the LED wall during a Sunday service and for special events. This entails motion backgrounds for worship, sermon slides for the pastor’s message, video/photo elements, and any other visuals that need to be displayed. 

The Camera Operators use cameras in a live setting to capture moments on stage during worship and the message each Sunday. This is achieved by working directly with the Video Switcher to create a visual experience for in-person services and our online live stream. 

Video Content Specialists assist the Video Director in capturing content for special events and projects for the church body, including content for in-service, web videos, social posts, and more. This includes coordinating shoots, capturing videos, and editing a polished, professional video. 

Volunteer Care Team

On this team, you can serve in one of several ways:

Hospitality – This role serves to help prepare the environment for volunteers to check-in and greet them as they arrive. This role also helps assist the Meals and Presentation team member as needed. 

Meals – This role helps cook the warm food menu items in the kitchen. Food can also be prepared at home and brought in. 

Presentation – This role makes sure food/drink is displayed in a way that is efficient for volunteers to grab and restock as needed. 

Worship Team

As a vocalist at Journey, you will be a part of our worship team that worships as the church, while leading the church. This role incorporates serving your community, the worship team, and ultimately Christ by developing, stewarding, and sharing your vocal gifting to lead others in worship. 

As a musician at Journey,you will be a part of our worship team as we create musical moments that lead others towards praise, surrender, and worship to God. This role incorporates your musical skills and playing ability within the worship team to lead others in powerful, evocative, and God-glorifying worship. 

As a Lyrics Operator at JCI, you will be a part of our worship team that helps to facilitate worship in our services. The lyrics of our worship songs are the declarations, prayers, and theology of our church. Your role gives those words to our people in real time, as we sing together in worship.
